About the Artist
Art is therapeutic. As artists, we need to create. Sometimes it doesn’t matter what, as the value is obtained through the creative process. Despite many times not knowing what I am creating, I subconsciously am drawn to my own insecurities. My relationship to my race as someone who identifies as black and white is one of these leading themes. It’s a jumbled confusing mess sometimes but it’s a huge part of who I am. Now using the ancient technique of tufting together with modern artistic influences from artists such as curriegoat, I consciously act on those previously unconscious thoughts while physically softening them through the medium. As tufting is often meant for usable items, aesthetics and simplicity are key which led me to carefully balance design, fine art, and craft.
Currently living in the pacific northwest, Blaise Coleman is a Washington raised artist studying at Bellingham’s Western Washington University. While attending a STEM high school, Blaise quickly learned what he did not what to do which lead him picking up his old passion in art. Now a studio art major, most of his work uses traditional media such as acrylic paint, charcoal, and printmaking although a blossoming interest in design and digital art has pushed his work further in that direction. About to graduate, Blaise wants to further build his portfolio so he can look for opportunities in a tattoo apprenticeship.
